Islamabad | Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan spent the night at a high-security prison after a court handed him a three-year jail sentence for corruption on the weekend, a verdict likely to end his chances of running in upcoming general elections.
Police arrested Mr Khan at his home in the eastern city of Lahore soon after the court’s decision was announced in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital on Saturday. Later, he was transferred to Attock prison, in eastern Punjab province, notorious for its harsh conditions and its inmates include convicted militants. Security has been tightened even further there to keep away protesters and media.
