GM had an electric car in 1998. Why did it fail?
In 2003, General Motors shut down production of an experimental car, that while successful, was doomed to fail.
It’s not an anniversary General Motors necessarily wants to celebrate but, 20 years ago, it officially canned its first electric car program, and began recalling the 1100-or-so GM EV1 coupes it had built.
They were sent to the crusher, a melancholy end to a program that started with a revolutionary one-off “concept car” called Impact in 1990, and led to the first production GM EV1s rolling off the line in 1996.
