The prime minister says Australia will spend whatever it takes to defend Australia. But he will find the cost is high and the scope for nation-building manufacturing is limited.

Given the events of last week, we might be forgiven for thinking that submarines are the be-all and end-all of Australia’s defence future.

Of course, they are important – and for the price they should be a very important part of the future. But there is much more to defence. It’s time to consider the broader context of Australia’s future defence and the additional expense to come.
