Decision to base US subs near Perth likely to upset some in Labor

Western Australia’s Labor government pushed for US and UK nuclear-powered submarines to be based and maintained near Perth under the AUKUS pact despite the risk of inflaming tensions with China.
Premier Mark McGowan went to ground on Friday refusing to comment on HMAS Stirling, located on Garden Island and just offshore from the state’s industrial heartland, becoming a home port for nuclear submarines purchased from the US.
