Bruising fight looms over Labor’s emissions policy

A coalition of Greens, activists critical of the use and credibility of carbon credits, and linchpin senator David Pocock are squaring up for a bruising fight over Labor’s cornerstone heavy industrial emissions reduction policy.

It is understood debate on Labor’s safeguard mechanism enabling legislation could begin as soon as Wednesday, and the government wants to ensure sufficient time for MPs to have their say on what could become a totemic once-in-a-generation chance to pass hard climate policy.
