Inflation readings in Australia and New Zealand topped expectations on Wednesday, fortifying the case for the countries’ central banks to lift interest rates to contain a sharp rise in the cost of living.

Australian inflation rocketed to a near 33-year high in the December quarter, sending shares 0.5 per cent lower on fears higher borrowing costs will erode corporate investment and bring the economy closer to a recession.
