Chalmers faces fiendish gas price dilemma but inaction won’t help

There’s only so long the treasurer can keep expressing his deep sympathy for those hit by soaring energy bills without coming up with solutions.

As he tries to find a way through the energy morass, Treasurer Jim Chalmers would do well to keep reminding himself that whatever policy he comes up with to force down gas prices, it will inevitably attract outrage.

Chalmers will find it a lot easier to think through the knotty issues when he accepts that it will be impossible to weave together a policy response that simultaneously satisfies households, manufacturers, gas producers and environmentalists.
