‘Light on detail, big on headlines’: Builders wary on 1m homes promise

Builders say they will not be able to return to the pre-pandemic pace of home construction needed to build the million homes proposed in the budget unless the government does more to solve crippling labour shortages and make land available.

While Treasury expects new dwelling completions to average 180,000 this year and next, the Labor government’s announcement that it aspires to build 1 million dwellings over the five years from 2024 implies lifting that total to 200,000 new homes annually.
