Treasurer Jim Chalmers says he had made a start on what he calls the “hard yards” of budget repair. In truth, the hard work has hardly begun.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers talked tough ahead of the budget. With a trillion-dollar debt and deficits as far as can be seen, “you need to start somewhere – and this is where we start”.

But the best that can be said about Tuesday night’s effort is that it did not make things much worse.
