‘Watch out’: corruption commission to intercept WhatsApp, Signal

Australia’s new national anti-corruption commission will have powers to intercept data shared on encrypted messaging apps including Signal and WhatsApp, prompting a warning for senior politicians and spy chiefs not to engage in unscrupulous conduct.

The new body – expected to be operational by mid-2023 – will have the same powers as existing intelligence and law enforcement agencies. Political debate continues about its reach and threshold for public hearings, as draft legislation is considered by MPs.
