Australia should join global ‘carbon club’ to soften safeguard blow

Labor should introduce an EU-style carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) to preserve the international competitiveness of Australia’s biggest carbon emitters as they become subject to tightening industrial pollution standards, said AiGroup.

Rather than exempting so-called emissions intensive trade exposed facilities such as steelmakers, chemical, cement and paper plants from Labor’s planned safeguard mechanism changes or via direct payments, AiGroup called for a “trade neutral” fix.
