Max Walsh, who wielded unique influence over the shaping of modern Australia as The Australian Financial Review’s chief political correspondent and editor-in-chief, died on Wednesday morning after a long struggle with dementia. He was 84.

Through his grasp of the central role of economics in politics and the corrosive effect of protection, voluminous scoops, knowledge, intellectual audacity and occasional cheekiness, Walsh was a power in the land.
