One of the hallmarks of Lunch with the AFR is the subject picks the restaurant. But as I wait for Paul Symon, the head of Australia’s foreign spy agency, I learn it’s the table that has been vetted.

His staff from “the Service” have done a recce to make sure we’re seated well away from other diners in the open-plan restaurant. There’s not a pot plant in sight.
