PM wins Coalition backing for religious freedom laws

Scott Morrison has won party backing for his landmark religious freedom legislation, finalising new protections for gay school students and putting pressure on Labor to state its position in Parliament before the May federal election.

Following marathon party room negotiations on Tuesday during which Mr Morrison warned the election would be lost unless the party came together, he won a broad consensus between his divided moderate and conservative factions.
