Telstra’s Penn says new $1.6b spend good for earnings
Key Points
- Telstra will spend an extra $1.4 billion to $1.6 billion in the next five years on 2 major infrastructure projects.
- One will add up to 20,000 new route kilometres to the telco’s optical fibre network.
- The other is building and managing the ground infrastructure and fibre network in Australia for satellite communications group Viasat as part of a 16.5 year contract.
Rapidly increasing demand for data connectivity is driving Telstra to spend an extra $1.6 billion over the next five years improving fibre networks between capital cities and building terrestrial infrastructure for satellite group Viasat.
“The one thing we can all start 2022 with a degree of certainty about is the demand for connectivity is only going to continue to grow, and quite dramatically,” Telstra chief executive Andrew Penn said, citing the increase in working from home among the factors driving the shift in demand.
