In May 1970, a month after Paul McCartney had announced his departure from the Beatles, Let It Be – a fly-on-the-wall documentary about the band – was rushed into cinemas.
“People thought ‘Oh my God, this is the Beatles’ break-up movie … this is the most dreadful thing I’ve ever seen,’” recalls the film’s director, Michael Lindsay-Hogg. “But when we made Let It Be, they weren’t breaking up. They were trying to find a way to stay together.”
