‘Absurd’ eligibility rules blocking quality MPs: Jacqui Lambie
Rigid rules blocking dual citizens and public employees from standing for federal Parliament are detracting from Australia’s democracy and keeping quality candidates out of public life, Jacqui Lambie has warned.
Describing as “absurd” historic provisions that prevent teachers, nurses, police officers and doctors from nominating for election, the Tasmanian independent has challenged the Morrison government to put forward a referendum question to overhaul section 44 of the constitution.
