G20 waters down 2050 pledge

Rome/Glasgow | Global attempts to reduce carbon emissions will live or die on developing countries such as India having access to affordable and scalable technology, Scott Morrison says, as pessimism grows over whether the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow will achieve progress.

Despite final pleas by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson designed to generate momentum for COP26, the G20 summit in Rome watered down the commitment on climate action, under pressure from heavy-polluting developing countries China, Brazil and India, as well as Russia.
