Highly regarded Speaker of the House of Representatives Tony Smith has decided to call it quits and will not contest the next federal election.
While Mr Smith will stay in the chair until the election, due by early next year, his former boss and federal treasurer Peter Costello said the retirement would leave a big hole in Parliament.
