Football goes Rome, not home, as Italy rains on England’s parade

The Italians just don’t know how to lose. But supporting England no longer feels like an act of tragicomic masochism.

London | The rain fell in England on a summer’s Sunday night, and the indefatigable Italian football team rained on England’s parade.

The English had spent the weekend preparing to celebrate a massive win in the Euro 2020 championship final, hosted on home soil. But in the end, it was the Italians who rose – as they so often do on the soccer field – to the big occasion.
