The self-described Picasso of perfume reflects on a fragrant career
Frenchman Serge Lutens, who is releasing two new collections, has made some of the world’s most memorable scents, yet he admits he never wears any.
Serge Lutens likens his work as a perfumer to the art of Picasso. “It is a reflection of me; it is substantiation,” he says. “When Picasso painted Dora Maar, he was painting his own portrait through Dora Maar. The same applies to Guernica, which is a projection of his own convulsions of pain. Life and creation are bound together.”
Where the Spanish artist spent a lifetime exploring colour and form, Lutens has explored unorthodox scent combinations and unusual ingredients over a career spanning five decades.
