A surge in metals prices lifted the Australian sharemarket to a record high at Friday's closing bell, shrugging off any concerns the Victorian lockdown will dent the domestic recovery and proving the power of fiscal stimulus remains a potent force for global shares.

JPMorgan Asset Management’s Kerry Craig said equities were moving up in line with the positive growth outlook.
