ASEAN’s credibility on the line with five-point Myanmar plan

Singapore/Jakarta | Protesters were back on the streets of Myanmar’s main city Yangon at the weekend, testing the military’s commitment to a roadmap out of the country’s political crisis formulated by regional leaders.

Leaders and foreign ministers from the 10 member nations of the Association of South East Asian Nations have agreed the violence that has left hundreds dead in Myanmar since the February 1 coup must stop and dialogue begin to seek a peaceful solution. The five-point plan formulated at the emergency leaders meeting in Jakarta on Saturday also included the appointment of an ASEAN envoy to help bring the warring sides together.
