On paper, Stark was strong. The colt’s parents had won almost $1 million racing at Flemington, Moonee Valley and other top tracks. The horse’s perfect bay coat held a body that twitched with barely contained energy.

At the Magic Millions auction at the Gold Coast in January 2018, Sydney racehorse owner Damion Flower liked what he saw. He put down $1.45 million for the untested animal, a small fortune that was barely noticed at the time.
