Scott Morrison is increasingly likely to commit to net zero emissions by 2050 before the next federal election, saying it was now his preference to either meet the mid-century target or get there beforehand.
In a move that could soften opposition within his own ranks, especially within the Nationals, the Prime Minister said the May budget would contain a national soils strategy which would give farmers and landholders an incentive to help reduce emissions.
