Britain shovels fresh rescue funds into lockdown abyss
London | Britain has dredged up £4.6 billion ($8.2 billion) in emergency funds to bail out shops, pubs, restaurants and tourism businesses, as the country braces for a fresh economic hit from a new lockdown that could last two months or more.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak said he would shell out up to £9000 per premises to more than 600,000 businesses in retail, hospitality and leisure, to get them through the shutdown announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson late on Monday (Tuesday AEDT).
