London | Britain has lurched back into a full-strength lockdown, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled an immediate shutdown of economic, social and educational activity until at least mid-February.

The country has lost its grip on the COVID-19 pandemic: many English hospitals are treating up to 50 per cent more patients with the coronavirus than they were in the first peak last April, as a new mutant strain runs riot.
