Christmas comes early to Melbourne

It's been a long few months since the MCG hosted a crowd at the Women's T20 World Cup final in March. "She's been pretty lonely," said Stuart Fox, the boss of the country's premier sports stadium.

Anthropomorphic oddness aside, Melbourne is moving quickly to restore big sporting events as the city emerges from its long coronavirus lockdown. The Boxing Day Test is on and could have 25,000 people in the stands, the Melbourne Cup will run as normal next Tuesday (although owners will have to watch it on TV like everyone else) and there's hope yet for an Australian Open tennis tournament in January.
