The 'Airbnb of textiles' has arrived in Australia
New Yorker Stephanie Benedetto is helping the fashion industry solve its sustainability crisis by finding new purpose for deadstock. Now she's bringing her business Down Under.
In an ideal world, Stephanie Benedetto will be jobless in the near future. For now she’s content to be CEO and co-founder of Queen of Raw, an online marketplace for fashion brands to find buyers for their deadstock fabric. But with any luck the company she calls the Airbnb of textiles will be so successful that she will no longer be needed and she can move on to other pursuits.
Founded in New York in 2014 by Benedetto and business partner Phil Derasmo, and now available in Australia, Queen of Raw is solving a very real problem for the fashion industry: what to do with the hundreds of billions of dollars in excess fabric gathering dust in warehouses – and destined for landfill or the incinerator.
