New Zealand in recession after record 12pc contraction
Wellington | New Zealand's economy shrank by a record 12.2 per cent in the second quarter, officially putting the country into recession for the first time since the global financial crisis.
Figures from Statistics New Zealand on Thursday showed gross domestic product in the three months to the end of June contracted far more than ever previously recorded, after strict COVID-19 lockdowns in the nation of 5 million people. It followed a slight contraction in output in this year's first quarter.
