Where's the national outcry as schools go backwards?
We 'Gave a Gonski'. But student performance has continued to slide despite the extra billions for schools. Time to end the fads, focus on teacher quality, and lift accountability and performance.
Why is there so little outcry over the scandal of Australia’s worsening school performance? The NSW Productivity Commission has used a simple but shocking graph that lays it out.
As shown below, funding per student in NSW has soared since Australia was invited to "Give a Gonski", a schools spendathon drawn up by top corporate chairman David Gonski under the Gillard government and adopted by the Coalition as its own. Yet, as the money poured in, the rankings of NSW school students in the OECD’s Program for International Student Assessment have now collapsed to a two-decade low.
