The Trump administration is pressing Australia and other partners to increase the tempo of joint exercises to preserve freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, with Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Defence Minister Linda Reynolds in Washington DC for crucial talks.

Seizing on the Morrison government's repudiation of China's maritime claims in the heavily contested waters, US officials confirmed that more frequent patrols as part of deepening military co-operation would be on the agenda at this week's AUSMIN talks.
