Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy says Australia could have avoided cases of community transmission of the coronavirus if it had moved earlier to require overseas travellers to undergo hotel quarantine.

Speaking to a parliamentary inquiry on Tuesday, Professor Murphy said the mandatory measure — introduced for all returning overseas travellers at the peak of Australia's pandemic crisis on March 28 — would have required more hotel capacity in capital cities.
