The mathematics of progression of a virus through a population are well defined. The more contagious a virus, the faster it spreads.

The technical term for this is R0 (pronounced “R nought”). This term defines how many other people a person who is infected may pass the virus onto – assuming everyone can get infected and there is no intervention.
