The AFL have defied a global sports shutdown after a marathon day of meetings where it was decided to push ahead with Thursday night's season opening blockbuster between Richmond and Carlton in the absence of crowds.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said their shortened 17 round season had become a 153 game journey, starting on Thursday night with shortened 16 minute quarters but the season could halt at any stage.
