Washington | It’s historic, it’s awesome, it’s sombre. But the Senate trial of Donald Trump is above all else an exercise in endurance.

The format is unashamedly austere. Senators and visitors to the galleries above the chamber floor are subject to the harshest strictures. No talking. No eating. No coffee. No mobile phones. No photos. No peeking over the balcony. “No leaning” warns the printout on media tables.
