A sixth confirmed death has the presumptive toll from the New Zealand volcano tragedy at 14 as police lose hope for the fate of eight people left on Whakaari, also known as White Island, after Monday's eruption.

At least three Australians are believed to be among the six confirmed dead, with 13 Australians in hospital and eight more unaccounted for, ranging in age from 15 to 72.
