Defence Department officials are scrambling to correct a $3.7 billion typo in Australia's $50 billion submarine project.

Amid ongoing tensions with the submarines' French government-owned designer, the Defence Department's annual report suggests that bureaucrats badly underestimated the cost of the project in its formative years.
