The five-yearly census delivers a sixfold benefit to the economy and is "critical" to the fairness, efficiency and integrity of the nation's economic and social infrastructure.
That's the assessment of the first cost-benefit analysis of the national population snapshot, commissioned by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and putting the census economic benefit at $666 million in gross annual value.
