The South Korea-Japan trade spat: Here's why it matters
There is a crisis unfolding in Asia, and few are paying attention. Not least the US government, which is probably the only actor that can fix it.
Two of the United States' core allies – Japan and South Korea – have become deeply estranged. Earlier this month, the bickering broke out into a nasty trade war. The conflict threatens not only the US alliance network but also regional prosperity and global supply chains. South Korean President Moon Jae-in has called relations with Japan an "unprecedented emergency".
