Smart cities could go rogue if we don't secure the technology
Australian towns and cities are using Chinese tech to run their communities better. But that comes with dangers too.
Elise ThomasIn cities and towns across Australia, smart city projects based on the same types of technology that underpins China’s social credit system are being rolled out. Exactly how many, exactly where and exactly what they are doing is difficult to know, however – and that’s a problem.
These projects, which are often implemented at the level of local councils, commonly involve surveillance or monitoring of public spaces, and connecting crucial infrastructure and processes to the internet.
