Why immigration has disappeared from the election campaign

The major parties have largely avoided talking about immigration this election for fear of empowering far-right politicians and alienating migrant voters, experts say.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has pledged to reduce the yearly permanent migrant intake from 190,000 to 160,000. Labor leader Bill Shorten said "that's fine" to the policy and warned against "dog whistling by political leaders about immigration and asylum seekers".
