ATO's debt tactics are 'excessive': Ombudsman
The Tax Office is deploying controversial debt recovery tactics on a significant number of small businesses at the same time as fighting them in legal disputes, placing operators under severe financial pressure.
A new report from the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman, Kate Carnell, has found the ATO has used garnishee notices and other recovery moves against businesses during Administrative Appeals Tribunal disputes, prompting a call for an immediate ban on the practice and legislative changes.
