Pub king Hemmes' $170m property portfolio
Pub baron Justin Hemmes is well known for his dozens of stylish hotels, restaurants and bars across Sydney. Less well known is that the off-duty Hemmes – who shows a clear penchant for waterfront homes – is an enthusiastic collector of residential property, with a family portfolio now worth more than $170 million.
Hemmes, the chief executive of his family's hospitality empire Merivale and worth $951 million on the 2018 Financial Review Rich List, is behind some of Sydney's swankiest and most ambitious hospitality venues such as CBD stalwarts Ivy and Establishment, and more recently the expansive beachside complexes the Newport Arms and the Coogee Pavilion.
