Social media platforms can't self-regulate

The former head of Facebook Australia, Stephen Scheeler, has called out the social media giants as being unable to regulate themselves, throwing his support behind potential legislation that would jail social media executives for not removing extremist material quickly enough.

The comments come as Facebook announced in a global blog post on Thursday that it would ban praise, support and representation of white nationalism and white separatism on the social network, in the wake of the Christchurch massacre.
