Scandinavian crime films and television series seem to have taken off from a place where the BBC used to excel. This is an intriguing film about a missing person. It contains elements of the thriller and the romance, while exposing morally discordant themes. Noomi Rapace gives a terrific performance as a Goth-looking 24-year-old with a sleazebag probation officer. She’s a nose-ringed, leather-clad, tattooed computer hacker with a secretive past and a toughness that grows on you. Slowly, the layers to her character are stripped away. Adapted from Stieg Larsson’s first novel, which he called Men Who Hate Women, this is an edge-of-the-seat suspense thriller cast with fresh faces.
