If the hot towel handed to you pre-flight is the amuse-bouche of airline beauty, consider the amenity kit the main meal. Prized by frequent flyers and often emblematic of an airline’s provenance, these kits have become collectable (check out eBay for vintage Pan Am pouches) but never stray too far from their utilitarian roots.

Indeed, toiletries have been a part of air travel since the beginning, when airlines would hand out cotton balls (to muffle the sound of the engine) and chewing gum (to help ease the ear pressure during take-off and landing). In the 1950s, other items were added (including razors, sewing needles and nail files – clearly not available now).
