Think carefully about what you pack for a night at Hedingham Castle – by my count, it’s 106 steps to the Royal Chamber, at the top of the Norman keep.

Even if you accept the offer of help to carry your case (I didn’t), you’ll probably be out of puff when you arrive. And if, like me, you leave your phone charger in the car, you’ll have to make the trip up the spiral staircase all over again.
