The Danish city that is definitely worth the side trip
Aarhus embraces its Viking identity via myriad museums, great restaurants, and even a strange clown pub.
Take a step closer. That gilded crucifix emerging from the candlelight features a Jesus like no other – Christ as Viking warrior. Or maybe even as Thor himself, complete with beard, plaits, decorative breast-plate and crown. There may be shades of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but you are in a seriously ancient place. The 11th century Åby-Crucifix is on display in the crypt chapel of similar age found below the Church of our Lady in Aarhus, Denmark’s second city and once a Viking fortified town.
