It was a scorching hot afternoon in February 2020 and the Arctic air-conditioning inside the Flinders Lane offices of the Melbourne Fashion Festival was set accordingly. Cramped around a boardroom table were several industry figures (myself included) judging the event’s National Designer Award. One of the last finalists was Laura May Gibbs, who wheeled in a rickety metal clothing rack of samples from her Nagnata label.

Dressed in her brand’s houndstooth knitted bodysuit and bike shorts, with her tanned skin and long sun-bleached locks, Gibbs looked more Byron-yoga-instructor/Cali-cool-girl than slick fashion designer. But pitching the purpose of her then two-year-old brand with zeal, she held her audience captive.
